What you get with Alexander Signature Series

Nest Bedding was established in 2012 and has developed 8 unique mattress designs, including one for kids. The mattresses produced by Nest Bedding, including the Alexander Signature Series, are available in several firmness choices. This sets the Alexander Signature Series apart from other compressed-for-shipping foam mattresses that come in only one firmness option.

Nest Bedding is also one of only a few online mattress companies that also have brick-and-mortar showrooms. Their 8 locations are in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, New York City, and Chicago.

The Alexander Signature Series was debuted soon after the company was launched, but was completely revamped in April 2016 to improve material quality and performance, and increase edge support. Made of 4 layers of foam and a 2” quilted cover, the Alexander Signature Series is recognized for being equally supportive and comfortable.

The characteristics of the Alexander Signature Series that contribute most to its popularity include:

  • Comfort: This mattress is supportive, even on the edges, but remains comfortable and provides solid pressure relief.
  • Edge support: Customers report being able to sleep directly on the edge of this mattress because of the edge support base.
  • No smell: The hygienic foams, organic materials, and eco-friendly manufacturing processes used in making the Alexander eliminate odors and the off-gassing period.
  • Warranty: The Alexander Signature Series comes with a 20-year warranty.

The potential weaknesses to be aware of when considering the Alexander Signature Series include:

  • Weight: The mattress is heavy and difficult to move around once set up. The queen size, for example, weighs over 100 pounds.
  • Firmness: Some sleepers find both the medium and soft firmness options too firm.
  • Motion transfer: Customers report feeling movement when bed partners change positions or get up.
  • Sleeping warm: The Alexander Signature Series uses foam with advanced cooling properties, but customers say it sleeps somewhat warmer than other foam mattresses.

About the Alexander Signature Series

Brand history

The corporate offices for Nest Bedding are located in Albany, California. Founder Joe Alexander established headquarters there in 2012 after working in the mattress industry for 2 decades with long-running, family-owned mattress companies. One of these companies was among the first to begin compressing and putting mattresses in a box.

As a runner, surfer, and health food advocate, Alexander found designing products that helped people achieve proper rest appealing. After designing a couple successful mattresses for his employers and innovating the packaging used to ship them, he made the decision to start his own venture.

The name of the company resulted from Alexander’s preference for gathering and using natural, local materials, much like a bird does when nesting. By also using local vendors, and committing to making mattresses with only organic materials, Nest Bedding has become recognized for being eco-friendly and community-focused.

Brand reputation

Nest Bedding has been given an A+ rating by the Better Business Bureau and, based on several thousand independent customer reviews, is considered to have excellent customer service. (The mattress is not sold on Amazon, and has only 7 reviews posted there that give it a cumulative rating of 4.5 out of 5.)

Known for being eco-friendly, the company delivers its mattresses from any of its 8 showrooms using bicycles to shrink its carbon footprint and eliminate delivery trucks. The Alexander Signature mattress is made from non-toxic, organic materials that are sustainable and biodegradable including organic wool and organic cotton.

A look at the Alexander Signature Series mattress

The American-made Alexander Signature mattress is available in Twin, Twin XL, Queen, King and California King, as well as custom sizes. It is comprised of a cover and 4 foam layers that give sleepers cooling and support, and is one of a small number of online mattresses that is available in 3 firmness levels – soft, medium, and firm. All foams used in the mattress are CertiPUR-US Certified.

The layers, which vary slightly depending on firmness level, are all breathable so they will not absorb excess heat:

Medium (chosen by 92% of customers):

  • Best for back and side sleepers
  • 5.5 out of a 10 on firmness scale
  • Cover – 2” quilted
  • Layer 2 – 4” of gel memory foam that absorbs and dispels heat, and provides pressure relief
  • Layer 3 – 1” of visco foam that provides bounce and responsiveness
  • Layer 4 – 2” of transition foam which lends additional support to the first 2 layers and that gives compression support to heavier sleepers
  • Layer 5 – 4” of base foam that improves edge support and prevents bottoming out

The layers are similar in the soft and firm options with slight modifications in construction specs:

  • Best for side sleepers
  • 3.5 out of a 10 on firmness scale
  • Cover – 1.5” quilted
  • Layer 2 – 2” of gel memory foam
  • Layer 3 – 2” of visco foam
  • Layer 4 – 3” of transition foam
  • Layer 5 – 4” of base foam

Firm (there is no visco foam layer in this option):

  • Best for back and stomach sleepers
  • 8.5 out of a 10 on firmness scale
  • Cover – 1.5” quilted
  • Layer 2 – 2” of gel memory foam
  • Layer 3 – 3” of transition foam
  • Layer 4 – 6” of base foam

The mattress works equally well on box springs, adjustable bases, slats (no more than 4” apart), or metal platforms and frames.

Sleep trial

Nest Bedding provides customers with a 100-night sleep trial and allows them to obtain a refund or make an exchange if they are unhappy.  The company requires customers to donate the original mattress to a local charity and will assist in identifying one if needed. Once the donation process is complete, and a donation receipt is provided to Nest Bedding, a refund will be processed.

While Nest Bedding will ship the Alexander Signature mattress anywhere in the world, all international orders are final. The trial offer and refunds do not apply internationally.

Shipping is free in the 48 continental states but there is a charge of about $150 to ship a mattress to Alaska or Hawaii. Alexander Signature mattresses are typically shipped via FedEx Ground without a requirement for a signature so you don’t have to be home when it arrives.

Each mattress is made by hand within 2-4 days after an order is placed. Transit times from California range from 1-5 business days depending on your location. Expedited shipping is available for an additional charge that will be quoted by customer service when you email them at sales@nestbedding.com. Costs and terms for shipping internationally will be calculated at checkout if you choose the payment option “International Checkout.”

After they’re made, the mattresses are compressed, rolled, and placed in compact boxes for shipment. Box dimensions for all sizes are roughly 18” x 18” x 48” and range in weight from 100-150 pounds.

Once your mattress arrives, there are only a few steps required for set-up:

  • Take the box into the room where you will be using it.
  • Remove the mattress roll from the box (avoid using a sharp object to open the box since you risk cutting the mattress)
  • Place the mattress roll on your base.
  • Remove the outer plastic wrap and unroll the mattress.
  • Remove the final outer plastic sleeve (your mattress will immediately begin to expand).
  • It takes 1-2 days for the Alexander Signature to fully expand but you can sleep on it right away.

Nest Bedding provides a 20-year warranty on each of its Alexander Signature Series mattresses.

How Alexander Signature Series performs

Motion isolation

The Alexander Signature absorbs movement like most foam mattresses and minimizes motion transfer. About 20% of customers, however, report feeling enough movement to wake them when their bed partners change position or get up.

Edge support

After Nest Bedding redesigned the Alexander Signature mattress in 2017, edge support was improved:

  • Edges sink between 2” and 3.5” in a conservative sitting position.
  • In a more aggressive sitting position, sinkage is around 4”.
  • If standing on the mattress, sinkage is 5” to 5.5”.

Customers do report being able to sleep directly on the edge of this mattress.

Foam mattresses typically have long lives because the materials in them are durable. Though Nest Bedding and its products have been around only 5 years, the 20-year warranty they provide with the Alexander Signature gives reason to believe its lifespan should range from 12-15 years minimum if cared for as directed.

The Alexander Signature is available in 3 firmness options which rate on a firmness scale of 1-10 (with 10 being the most firm) as follows:

Medium (chosen by 92% of customers):

  • Best for back and stomach sleepers
  • 8.5 out of a 10 on firmness scale

The top layer of the Alexander Signature mattress is made with breathable SmartFlow Air Flow Foam and the cover is made with Thermic Phase Change Cooling Fabric. These elements are designed to absorb and dispel heat. Most customers note that the Alexander sleeps cool and that the quilted cover improves breathability.

There is no smell with the Alexander Signature mattress. The more hygienic foams, organic materials, and eco-friendly manufacturing processes used in making the Alexander Signature Series eliminate offensive odors and the off-gassing period completely.

The 4 layers of foam in the Alexander Signature Series – along with the 2” of foam padding in the cover – makes the mattress very responsive. It hugs the body but has plenty of bounce so it performs well during amorous activities.

How to take care of your Alexander Signature Series mattress

Like most mattresses, the Alexander benefits from a mattress protector to avoid spills and stains on the mattress cover itself. If you do have spills, do not use household cleaning products on them. Instead, take a clean, dry towel and blot until no more moisture appears on the towel (do not wipe or scrub). Leave the bedding off until the spot fully dries. For general cleaning when there are no spills or stains, use your vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to remove dust or pet hair.

The cover itself is quilted fabric composed of cotton and polyester and is designed to dispel heat and keep the surface cool. It is not removable. While you cannot flip the mattress because of the layered construction, the company recommends that you rotate it every 3 months.
